What is a health and safety risk assessment?
Risk assessment is a systematic process designed to identify, evaluate and document potential hazards in the workplace, and to take measures to reduce or prevent these hazards. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure the safety and health of employees, as well as the operational continuity of the organization. The risk assessment process includes several main steps:

  1. Hazard identification At this stage, all possible factors that could cause injury or damage are identified. This can include physical hazards (such as earthquakes, dangerous machinery), chemical hazards (exposure to hazardous substances), biological hazards (bacteria, viruses), and psychosocial hazards (stress, harassment at work).
  2. Assessing the severity of risks: Once risks have been identified, their severity must be assessed. This involves analyzing the degree of potential for harm and the likelihood of occurrence. This assessment is usually done based on quantitative and qualitative parameters.
  3. Assessing the likelihood of occurrence: At this stage, the likelihood that the risk will actually cause harm is assessed. This is done by analyzing statistical data, studying similar events in the past, and other factors that could affect the risk.
  4. Risk prioritization: Depending on the assessment of the severity of the risks and the likelihood of occurrence, the various risks are prioritized. Risks with a high severity and a high likelihood of occurrence will receive higher priority in treatment.
  5. Planning and taking measures to prevent or reduce risks: In this stage, plans and procedures are developed to reduce the identified risks and reduce the likelihood of them occurring. This can include changes to work processes, installation of safety measures, employee training, and other actions to improve safety.
  6. Monitoring and control: After implementing measures to prevent or reduce risks, ongoing monitoring and control must be carried out to ensure their effectiveness. This includes periodic inspections, investigation of unusual events, and adjustment of procedures as necessary.
